چکیده

We present a silicon model of an axon which shows promise as a building block for pulse-based neural computations involving correlations of pulses across both space and time. The circuit shares a number of features with its biological counterpart including an excitation threshold, a brief refractory period after pulse completion, pulse amplitude restoration, and pulse width restoration. We provide a simple explanation of circuit operation and present data from a chip fabricated in a standard 2 m CMOS process through the MOS Implementation Service (MOSIS). We emphasize the necessity of the restoration of the width of the pulse in time for stable propagation in axons.

Low-Power Silicon Spiking Neurons and Axons

This paper presents low-power versions of two circuits often used in analog VLSI models of neural systems. The circuits model the spiking behavior of the axon hillock and the pulse propagation of axons.

Comment on "Detection, stimulation, and inhibition of neuronal signals with high-density nanowire transistor arrays".

Patolsky et al. (Reports, 25 August 2006, p. 1100) used silicon nanowires to record action potentials in rat neuronal axons and found increases in conductance of about 85 nanosiemens. We point out that the data correspond to voltage changes of about -85 millivolts on the nanowire and that conceivable mechanisms of axon-nanowire interaction lead to signals that are opposite in sign or smaller by...

Low-power Silicon Neurons, Axons, and Synapses

Power consumption is the dominant design issue for battery-powered electronic devices. Biologically-inspired sensory preprocessors may be an important component of portable computing devices that require real-world visual or auditory input. The silicon neural design style presented in (Mead, 1989; Andreou et al., 1991) naturally supports low-power VLSI design; in this design style, MOS transist...

Topographic Map Formation by Silicon Growth Cones

We describe a self-configuring neuromorphic chip that uses a model of activity-dependent axon remodeling to automatically wire topographic maps based solely on input correlations. Axons are guided by growth cones, which are modeled in analog VLSI for the first time. Growth cones migrate up neurotropin gradients, which are represented by charge diffusing in transistor channels. Virtual axons mov...

Substrate-bound protein gradients for cell culture fabricated by microfluidic networks and microcontact printing.

Graded distributions of proteins are pivotal for many signaling processes during development, such as morphogenesis, cell migration, and axon guidance. Here, we describe a technique to fabricate substrate-bound stepwise protein gradients by means of a microfluidic network etched into a silicon wafer with an array of parallel 14-micrometer-wide channels, which can be filled with a series of arbi...
